Alcohol Ban - Covid-19

Effective immediately, alcohol sales are banned at all locations in the state of Florida.

Due to a statewide spike of almost 9,000 COVID-19 cases, a record, the Department of Business and Professional Regulation as banned the service of alcohol at all locations. Although there is no official word yet from Department of Florida Commander Rick Johnson, I think it is safe to assume that includes all American Legion Posts with a liquor license.

Since about 70% of the membership is Vietnam Era, a high risk group, this is probably a good thing for the health of most members. However, it is bad news financially for the great majority of posts that depend on bar sales to support their programs.

The time has come for posts to look for other means of raising money to support activities. We have no bar, no physical post and depend on donations from the community we serve. Many posts have become complacent in fund raising. They rely on gamboling machines and alcohol sales for income. When they lost the machines there was all kinds of hand wringing and gnashing of teeth. But adjustments were made.

Post 115 has never depended on gambling or alcohol sales and delivers a wide array of the 4 Pillar services to the Flagler County Community. Perhaps the rest of the 17th District could learn a thing or two from our example.
